Vienna

A whirl of gilded Hapsburg palaces and regal parks on the banks of the blue Danube, Vienna is one of the most popular and beautiful cities of Europe. Famous for its High Baroque churches and aristocratic mansions that pepper the central Innere Stadt, tradition and innovation walk hand in hand. The museums that flank magnificent squares in the impressive MuseumsQuartier are home to some of the world’s most provocative contemporary art behind a striking basalt façade. The Viennese love Gemütlichkeit (relaxation), so this city is to be savored not rushed, whether you're indulging in a dark chocolate Sachertorte in a chandelier-lit coffee house or rising gently above the twinkling Prater in the Riesenrad Ferris wheel.

The State Opera House

The Vienna State Opera House was opened in 1869 with a gala performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni. It has since become one of the world's leading opera houses. Many great musicians have held the post of director, among them Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm and Lorin Maazel. We have chosen three of the most beautiful and beguiling works in opera history so you can see this incredible building in all its glory. They are as follows:

Madama Butterfly – 9th, 12th and 15th March 2012

Puccini's Madama Butterfly captures the vulnerability of innocence and immortalizes the power of tradition through a legendary story of heartbreak and betrayal. The Japanese geisha Butterfly falls victim to an American lieutenant's reckless passion. From Butterfly's beloved aria "Un bel di vedremo" to the "Flower Duet" full of hope and anticipation, Madama Butterfly is a timeless classic not to be missed.

Carmen – 24th, 27th February, 1st March 2012

Bizet’s sexy thriller about a soldier’s ill-fated obsession with the ultimate femme fatale is arguably the world’s most popular opera. Featuring truly brilliant orchestration, an unrivaled procession of hit tunes, and a stage full of gypsies, smugglers, factory girls, and “tor-ee-a-dors”, Carmen packs all the sizzle of Spanish culture into an irresistible theatrical event.

Tosca – 19th, 22nd, 30th March, 2nd, April and 4th, 8th, 11th, 14th June 2012

One of the world’s most popular operas, Tosca boasts an action-packed story, larger than life characters, and some of Puccini’s most beautiful music, including the showstopper aria “Vissi d’arte”. Famed opera diva Floria Tosca wants revolutionary painter Cavaradossi’s sole romantic attention. Menacing chief of police Scarpia wants Tosca at any cost. The resulting clash between all-consuming passion, unbridled lust, and political dissent makes for a gut-wrenching rollercoaster ride, with plenty of great opportunities for all three principal singers to show off their artistry and individuality.
