My passion is getting off the beaten track, seeing and experiencing places that are a world away from those that I am used to; meeting new people and submerging myself in a totally different culture. Music and dance as well as food are intrinsically woven into these experiences, and have given me some of my best memories. In Tanzania, every Sunday morning I would listen to the gospel music coming from the local church - the heart of the community - which was always full to the brim, the music was spine tingling and sung with so much passion. Working in Zambia, the village witch doctor prescribed a day and night of dancing to rid an ill woman of evil spirits. The singing, dancing and drumming were incredible, raw and brilliant, and by the time they had finished the drummers’ hands were red and almost bleeding - a sight and sound that will haunt me for ever. Closer to home, some of the best nights I’ve had in Ireland are spent in the local pub; when the village fiddle band start playing, the night inevitably turns into a lock in and impromptu party with wonderful live music and banter between strangers.
