 | | Caroline Grayburn Musical influences throughout my life have been eclectic from opera to Pink Floyd, Burning Spear and jazzbut each piece of music provokes thoughts and memories of particular times, places and most importantly, people. Music is undoubtedly one of the best ways to understand a country's history, its culture and its heart and I have been lucky enough to travel to many parts of the world where music and dance have formed some of the most memorable parts of my journey. Musical moments that will stick forever in my mind and in my heart include an impromptu flamenco performance at 3am in a tiny bar in southern Spain - magical in its unexpectedness and in its execution; when working in Botswana the sound of an informal choir whose rich voices singing traditional songs frequently punctuated the night time sounds of the bush and in Mali at the Festival in the Desert - a stage in the middle of sand dunes in the Sahara, Tuareg on splendidly dressed camels (a perfect vantage point to see over the crowds), the sound of women ululating across the hot afternoon air and later sitting on cool sand under a star filled sky listening to music from all over West Africa - from Tinariwen to reggae from Cote d'Ivoire. |
