African Music Safari - Cape Town
|
 | | | | The music of Cape Town is as diverse as its people. The city at the bottom of the continent of Africa is like a cup of coffee, says poet Jethro Louw. “With a good cup of coffee, all the flavour settles at the bottom. That's Cape Town.” This special trip has been designed to take you between the lines of Cape Town’s roots music, culture and lifestyle. It is a musical journey featuring the very best traditional African, Goema and Jazz music all set against, what is in our opinion, one of the worlds most extraordinary travel destinations.
Musical roots… Mac McKenzie, one of the city's most prolific composers, describes Cape Town as a 'pirate city': “we have pirated all the music of the world in this town, so our sound is a hybrid, it's got everything in it.” This musical hybrid is formed from Goema, the music created by the collision of slaves, slave masters and Khoisan at the Cape; it is formed by the Jazz that came in over American public radio, by the jazz that came in on the trade ships and the American navy ships; it is formed by the traditional African music that migrated down from central Africa, through Joburg and eventually to Cape Town.
Get in to the rhythm… We set the tone for the programme with a welcome dinner on the slopes of Table Mountain, joined by a cross section of local musicians. The best way to know the city is through its people. So from the start we'll be connecting you with Capetonians. Through the programme, we take you deep inside the many forms of music of the city, you will meet local musicians, watch them perform, visit their homes, sample the excellent home cooking and superb local wines. Explore the origins of the African instruments they play, such as the djembe drums, marimbas and bows, uhadis and deep bass voices. Join in on musical sessions yourself or sit back with a glass of local wine and simply enjoy the performance. We'll also explore the role that music plays in education and social development through a selection of township music and arts projects.
More than music… It's not just about the music – the music is a lens through which to experience the city deeply. You'll do all the iconic must-dos, with a musical spin. Table Mountain. The Peninsula. The Wine Route. And then there's the additional activities that we can arrange: a sunset cruise in Table Bay, a local safari, helicopter rides, whale watching, shark diving, excursions along the West Coast flower route...
